Security in Mexico
Security in Mexico: An Honest Review
Potential foreign investors are seriously concerned of the security in Mexico. I would add that Mexicans, in general, are concerned about the security levels in certain regions of the country.
Mexico limps from security-related matters that affect its competitiveness indicators significantly. We cannot turn a blind eye on this fact, and foreign investors pose the following question:
How Risky Mexico Really Is?
Business Security Survey in Mexico
The American Chamber of Commerce in Mexico (Amcham) carries out a Business Security Survey with its members and the results shed light on the security environment in Mexico. According to the 2018 report, we highlight the most relevant findings:
- Most companies considered that the level of safety did not change in the last two years (2016-2018).
- Tamaulipas, State of Mexico, Mexico City, Michoacan, and Guerrero are the top 5 states with greatest security challenges.
- Yucatán, Querétaro, Aguascalientes, Campeche, and Quintana Roo are the top 5 states with least security concerns.
- Most companies highlighted the following specific issues: safety for employees and family, information security, cargo transportation, the impact of crime, and the physical security of facilities.
- The top 5 most common crimes or incidents are raid on the supply chain transport, virtual extorsion, theft, aggression, or threat to employees, facilities trespassing.
According to the survey, I highlight the fact that most companies did not suspend or relocate their industrial facilities in Mexico due to security reasons. However, about 38% of the surveyed companies reported that they invested 5% or more of their annual operating budget in security.
In sum, a potential investor has to take into account the several factors, from logistics to a security-wise budget, when deciding to invest in Mexico
